Hard Skills (Must-Have Requirements)

  • Physical Capability (55 lbs.): Able to move equipment and work in attics, basements, and varied building conditions.
  • Safety Consciousness / Common Sense: Follows safety protocols to protect self and others on site.
  • High School or Trade Diploma: Baseline education required.
  • Math Skills (Algebra & Geometry): Applies formulas for area, volume, and dimensions relevant to construction.
  • Basic Computer Skills: Uses email, Word, and Excel for documentation and reporting.
  • ESL Fluency: Proficiency in English to learn technical terms and concepts effectively.

Bonus Experience or Skills

This section includes experience, knowledge, and skills that will help a person succeed in the HERS Rating Industry, but are not required in order to become a Rater.

  • Construction Experience: Comfortable navigating job sites and interacting with tradespeople.
  • HVAC Experience: Familiar with systems and terminology.
  • Framing Experience: Knowledge of structural layout and assembly.
  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret construction documents.
  • Insulation & Air Sealing: Understanding of materials and installation methods.
  • Glazing Knowledge: Familiarity with window performance and installation.
  • Science Background: Strong foundation for applying building science principles.
  • Advanced Computer Skills: Proficiency with PDF tools (Bluebeam, Foxit, Adobe) and modeling/design software (SketchUp).
